The Avenue of Eternal Tranquillity by K Overman-Edmiston

On a ferociously cold Moscow night, a man drives to the car park of a hotel near Red Square, takes off his hat and coat and lies down in the snow as if going to bed to sleep.  In the arctic conditions, he dies.  From a window high up in the Hotel Rossiya, a couple looks down upon the figure lying in the snow.  The Avenue of Eternal Tranquillity interweaves the stories of two couples: Pyotr and Yuliya, living in the Soviet Union of the 1960s and Hannah and Luke travelling the trans-Siberian railway to Moscow in the early years of the new millennium.  Their paths collide during the festive season in Moscow 2002.  This novel traces two deeply founded relationships that provide insights into love's tenuous beginnings to its rewards and complexities, and its potential for tragedy.

All in the Telling by Brian Smith

All in the Telling by Brian Smith

For each of us there is a story and to know our story is to know ourselves.  But a story can be told in many ways and it is the telling which determines how our lives unfold.’

This is Julie Grenfeld’s story – though this is not the story she originally set out to write.  That was to be a biography of Margot Stanton who believed in the power and importance of stories.  But Margot has hidden her own story well. As Julie gathers the stories which surround Margot she finds herself becoming more detective than biographer, and when her search takes her in unexpected directions her journey becomes one of self-exploration as well.

A Son a Mary Dance by John Petris

A Son a Mary Dance by John Petris

In Egypt Ivan Nedisovich finds the Biblia Croatia, which he translates and interprets with the assistance of the wordrich Ali Ali, a rickshaw-driver. He discovers that in the times of the historical Jesus, Judea is run by the Pilate-HerodAnnas-Caiaphas Trust, or PHACT, whose god and religion is BIB (BusinessIsBusiness). Among its concerns PHACT runs a profitable (or prophetable) virgin-birthspectacular and make-a-messiah business, in which the familychreis (Josephchreis, Mariachreis and Jeezchreis) become accidentally involved, thanks largely to Judas Iscariot and his chariots.

A satire on religion and the modern world, A Son a Mary Dance is a linguistic tour de force.

Short Story Collection

Glitter Rose by Mariane de Pierres

Glitter Rose by Mariane de Pierres

The Glitter Rose stories are set against the background of Carmine Island (an island reminiscent of Stradbroke Island, Queensland) where a decade ago spores from deep in the ocean blew in, by a freak of nature, and settled on the island. These spores bring fierce allergies to the inhabitants of the island. And maybe other, more sinister effects. As we follow Tinashi’s journey of moving to and settling into island life, we get a clearer picture of just what is happening on Carmine Island.

Novel in Verse

A Promise of Peaches by Valerie Volk

A Promise of Peaches by Valerie Volk

It was an act of simple kindness for an Australian couple to take two Czech refugees from post World War II Europe into their working-class home. They could never have foreseen the tensions these sophisticated Europeans would create, or the life-changing impact they would have on their teenage daughter. This novel in verse explores sympathetically the culture clashes of 1950s immigration and the unfolding of adolescent sexuality.
